Do It Youself (DIY)Wedding Flowers

Brides are definitely becoming more adventurous…
There has been a move towards brides wanting to do their own weddings flowers. Sometimes all of it, and sometimes just some of it…..
DIY Wedding Flowers can look perfect with a little practice.
There are many reasons for doing wedding flowers yourself. Two main ones are that the bride simply wants too because she's dreamed about her perfect wedding since being a little girl, and secondly it's simply a case of budget. Some brides to be we meet are very nervous of not getting it right – our advice is always enlist the help of a friend, a nice bottle of wine and have a go…..as they say practice makes perfect.

Our tips for giving it a go…….
  1. If you are not completely confident on sorting all the flowers out, maybe ask your florist to handle the bouquets and buttonholes and then take on the venue flower arrangements yourself.
  2. Enlist on a course for wedding flowers. It will build your confidence and is well worth it. Field Gate is holding one on the 19th October. Do join us.
  3. Enlist the help of friends and family. Most of us have a friend or family member who has an eye for this sort of thing and is known to be creative. (this person can be annoying to those not creative….)
  4. Sign up to Pinterest and start pinning to your heart’s content on all the themes you love. We always ask our brides for this as it gives us a favour of what they love and the type of look they are trying to achieve. Add pictures of the dress too – this is very useful.
  5. Vintage weddings and garden parties are better for DIY. Letting your florist do the arrangements is definitely easier if your wedding is a strictly formal affair. If you want complicated, striking or tall arrangements then you really should enlist the help of a local florist.
We have just delivered flowers to a lovely garden party wedding in Leicestershire – the photos are truly stunning. Her Mother must have been a trained florist and definitely had the eye for putting flowers together.

Must go. The sun is shining and jobs to do. September always a buzy month for planning the next season. We are extending our patches next year to include more perennials and roses – watch this space.

What flowers are in our bouquets this week...

What a weekend... sun, wind, sun, more wind & then finally rain. But the flowers are growing well. The first of the sweet peas went into our bouquets this weekend, mainly in bud so they will open during the next few days, they smell amazing, old fashioned colours and strong in scent that you can smell them in the next room.

Other flowers that are now coming into flower this week are cosmos, ammi majus, lavender and salvias. The calendula are now really busy plants and just coming into bud... hopefully some will be just right for next weeks bouquets adding a new colour into the mix... lovely bright and fresh orange!
